On February 14-17, 1995, I travelled to Nazran, the capital of Ingushetia, and to the bordering Chechen provinces. During my trip, I visited two refugee camps and a hospital in Nazran, and conducted interviews with a number of refugees, wounded war victims, and officials in the Ingushetian government. Just before my trip to Nazran, I attended the international conference in Moscow on “The KGB Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.” The conflict in Chechnya was the main issue discussed. The papers delivered by Russian members of parliament and by human rights activists provided additional insights into the issues related to the Russian-Chechen war, inspiring this report.
